Well, this year’s Louie Awards Show has come and gone, and I’m certainly glad I made it back there after several years of non-attendance. It was a good show, and the members of our group definitely enjoyed themselves. A couple of observations to consider:
Venue was fantastic. The Mellwood Arts Center was the best location they’ve ever had – considering the locations I’ve seen. It was interesting, open and fine for “mingling.” I refuse to use the word “networking.”
- The winning work was impressive. But after viewing all the entries, I still have to wonder what some folks truly consider breakthrough creative. Mind-boggling.
- The judging was tougher this year. That’s a good thing. There were a number of categories in which no golds were awarded. Makes us all work harder. As a community, we’ll get better by being judged on a national level, not a local level.
- Doe-Anderson did well. Real well. I’m glad that most everything we entered won something. Most of it was national work. And most of it won gold.
- I’d forgotten that, for the vast majority of attendees, the show is primarily a social affair. Most everyone was dressed better than I was. Although, that’s no great feat.
Overall, I thought the show was very well put together, and I offer my heartfelt congratulations to those who pulled it off. Excellent job. The food and drink were fine and in ample supply, the singing “semi-mariachi” band performed well, the presentation moved quickly and it was funny when it needed to be. The work was good, too. I hope it gets even better.
It was all enough to ensure that I’ll be back next year – just dressed better.
